Video Design

Video Design and Production

this is the site to go to get inspiration about design

www.designhistory.org

research
concept
design production
delivery
you need to know your competition if u are planning to bring about something .
new.

your competitor is someone who offers similar or same products.

target group

what car they drive
house
where they shop
this is found out by doing research and analyseas a team which methododlogy is best
to carry out this research.
it is usually better to use a multifaceted approach.

READ UP ON TYPOGRAPHY MILESTONES AND DIGITAL REVOLUTION IN GRAPHIC DESIGN. THERE IS GOING TO BE A QUIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

DESIGN PRODUCTION

the most successful concepts are created on the computer, allowing others to feel like they were a part of the final decision.

CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY
SURVEY
INTERVIEW
NATURALISTIC OBSERVATION-INVOLVES HYPOTHESIS TESTING
quasi experiment
exploratory research

to become a good designer you do not touch the computer until the fine tuning of your design

there is always a visual image representing the image.

it is pardonable to be defeated but

interpersonal communication
intrapersonal communication
group communication

Theories in Communication

-HCM -human computer interaction.how man responds to machine.iconic design.
if u want to become a wicked web designer u have to kno a lot about this stuff.

learning theories

-a lot of design clues present

RON SPIRO

the benefits of hypertext allow u to cater for the different learners.

as a designer u have to design a work flow.its a visual rep.of how things are carried out
in it there is info of who, what, where, when the client will have to give u a written brief then u make one for yourself.
from this a work order form is drawn up.

In a statement of work, u state what u will be doing and what u will not be doing
for example copy writing and coming up with slogans etc.

it also consists of technical info. How the client proofreads and sign off from the work flow
a what stage does more money come in

if a client refuses to out down a percentage of money for a job then chances are they wil not pay u for the job done
a work flow does not have to be linear.it can also be lateral

it is a fact that there will be disagreements with clients and split opinion.

*delivery

handing over can be stressful. u have to have different plans when delivering completed work
how will they receive this product.it should always be delivered in its highest quality.

balance-compare heads to heads ,pics against pics.stories against stories.

contrast-separate items on the page so they get the attention needed.

rhythm-allows reader to move from one medium to another.like in the Sunday gleaner where there are comics in the middle of the star.staggering headline stories and pothers on the page.

unity-tie page together so it isn't divided.the way that content is divided will give a nice outline and overall layout in the end.

harmony-standard appearance from day to day. normally refers to typography harmony

trapping-a process of placement of colors on one sheet of paper.if a page has five different colors on a page it will og through the machine those amount of times.
a register-when it is printed properly, miss registration is when it is not.

The process of trapping is how u fix this. two techniques.
1} choke
2}spread

a knockout-taking a shape out of a other shape or color.

you have to design based on your constraints

spot colors- a designer should not proof read they should not.

EXERCISE FOR CLASS NEXT WEEK

DESIGN an album cover for your favorite artist. It should only be done with one color.

(BOOKS TO GET FOR DESIGNING)

six thinking hats and LATERAL THINKING by Edward Debono
get this book as soon as possible.

Rightness is what matters in vertical thinking richness is what matters in lateral thinking.

a problem is simply the difference between what one has and what one wants.

Three types of problems

Requires for a solution more info or a different approach to get that solution.

six states

white hat-deals with facts
yellow hat
red hat
black hat
blue hat

Process

have written work, because of legal issues.

Statement of Work

things your going to do,the things the company needs to do,job description in a table format

they need to provide some text of what should be done.

conditions must be noted:changes and alterations.

In the final stages of the process you should also have an outline of how the final product will be presented.

FINAL PROJECT:document the process of your final project have the six hats and the other processes of your project.
mind maps, define six hats,
visual direction through mind maps

This class also proved to be quite effective as it helped me to understand how to clearly outline the tasks which have to done in the final project this semester as well as beyond.

The Beginning of After Effects

MR.Gary Ferguson

AFTER EFFECTS CLASS

Mission

learn as much as possible about the subject.

we will be using transformations, and key frames to move objects
around

After effect is mainly for motion design graphics.
with AE you can render for tv and still for websites.
you have to be wary of ur output ratio.

to open a filter you go on composition then select ok . after that u go on toggle transparency grid then click on grid and guide options and select safe grid.

you can now create a flash movie using after effects.

680by 480 is for analog while digital is 780 by 480.

in demonstration, about how to do a simple after effect thing.

you to import things to the program you say control I hold the shift key to import more than one file. you can create new folders in various ways.

you can press space bar to stop the movie.

rotate=W
layer, transform, auto orient, orient along path, this gets the butterfly moving along the path set for it

to add a shadow, select object, then effect, then drop shadow then you make whatever changes u like.

The respective drop down menu shows how much shadow to add to the object
you can copy and paste effects from one layer to another like in photo shop

when the movie is doe u go to composition, make movie then ok.

I get the feeling that i am going to enjoy this class very much.

Blender From a deeper angle.

journal class #5

when rendering you should understand the rendering presets.

under the scene context,
buttons window, there is logic, script, scene context. with this you get to render your animation and render preset button.

The presets are sensible settings you use for different formats.

If u choose the pal button something else changes, this button can be found under the scene context button found along the panels row.
pal and ntsc deals with the amount of pixels or aspect ratio, that is how it looks
you can change where u render to by default.

blender renders 250 frames by default
output it as a Quicktime

to know where you are rendering to,you would go to the output section then select where you want it to be.

when this is done you then also go to the things under the format section and select the format for your animation.

After this u select the button animation then save this to where u want.

to let the camera go exactly to where you want,go to view, align view, align active view to camera.

by default the camera is set at 35mm. increasing the lens number can cause a "zoom in" effect.
decrease in the lens has a "zoom out" effect.

LIMITS

when the limit button is selected blender draws a line to indicate the distance that the camera can ?"see" .the limits can be tweaked using the "clipping"settings.
u have to select tthe camera to see the clipping settings.

its better to do the camera thing in model view s you can see all your buttons. make sure the camera is selected in editing context.

mat. is the combination of textures, colors and specularity .etc.that has been applied to that object.

MATERIALS AND TEXTURES

materials can be changed in shading context.go to shading context materials sub context shaders tab.
textures can be combined to create materials.

This class helped to further aid in allowing me to understand the various things which are involved in creating an animated model.

The Processes involved in Blender

Instructions of how to create a simple blender model

if u right click in blender, that is how you move.
three things found on it. lamp, camera, cube.
2,4,6 are for left, right and spin the interface.
7,1,3 allows u to see specific views on the image.

grab,rotate,scale mode.Blender follows a set of patterns.

i should be able to alter existing images.

make sure i am in frame one, create key frames
in blender object are keyframeable by themselves

note to self always right select when you are trying to make changes to a face of an abject.

I should look at mesh and modifiers.

a modifier is similar to a preset action which changes things from one form to another.

you can take two meshes and apply them.

how do you add shapes to others?

This class was quite interesting,i was exposed to the world of animation which was qutie a journey to begin with i am anxious to see where this knowledge will take me.

Creative Typography

CLASS 2

in this class we discussed what we saw as art and definition of design.

what is design?

who is a designer?

what would u think is the core skill of the designer?

for this class we made a distinction between art and commercialized art.

Making the Invisible Visible

*EVERY DESIGNER MUST HAVE A STRONG INTERNAL CREATIVE PROCESS.

the lecturer's journey was very unique. he finished his degree but found an interest in computers.

He took on photo shop, took some of his school fee to buy a computer.Did his degree in Trinidad but this had proved to be a semi disaster.

He came out knowing a little about programming and started the company Oral Technologies.

he started a business, and designed websites without knowing how to do so.
they looked at the difference bwetween site from 2001 compared to now.

HIS EXPERIENCE

computer information systems
interested in design,movies, animation
problem solving ,client driven design process.

Objectives to Cover

design as problem solving.
define-objective,target market,client requirements, issues.
research-absorb-cross fertilization.
patience.
narrow research.
brainstorm,experiment.
patience.
evaluate,experiment.
define and explain idea.

*canibalize your world and not your particular area.

in whatever you do in designing you must always think about the audience. This is essential.

ENEMIES OF THE PROCESS
anxiety,impatience
the client
you
attitude

a good designer is a good communicator,a good negotiator,a great listener,problem solver,and philosopher.

LEARNING DESIGN
*eat the world
*formal instruction
*reverse engineering
*self taught
*intuitive
*mentor ship
*collaboration

We were asked to go through all Johny walker ads and tell what they might be about the figure out words which described it.
place this on the product and brand wheel.

This class proved to be quite interesting and helped me to have a critical eye when looking at the advertisements which are on the various media.
